Are You Still Applying Granular Urea
The Full Story
Granular urea application with your local bulky truck or with your own spreader has been the go-to method of applying urea to farmland for decades.
It is easy and it gets the job done.
However, changes are on the horizon, first was the introduction of the restrictions on urea application with a total of 190kg/ha, and now we are hearing more and more about the global environment. For many it is time to re-think what and how they are doing things on farm so that they can be doing as much as they can to be sustainable.
Sustainability can mean different things to different people, for some they are thinking of being environmentally sustainable, reducing leaching and farm run-off to protect the waterways, mitigating emmisions, and even financial sustainability.
Many farmers are looking at their fertiliser application as something they can improve and control.
Granular Urea vs Dissolved Urea
Financial Sustainability
Farm gate prices are at a record high, and fertiliser prices are high as well. As Tow and Fert specialists, we are confident in the savings that farmers can achieve when they change from granule urea to foliar urea. In summary you will see the following prices from the table:
Tow and Fert RJ AgriSpray application $76
Granule self application $93
Bulk application $101
There are other well-documented benefits to using a Tow and Fert Service these include virtually no leaching, reduction in emissions to the atmosphere and even an improvement in animal health, in particular lameness in cows.
And you grow the same amount of grass.

Want To Grow Grass and Be Environmentally and Financially Sustainable At The Same Time?
We fertilise Southland Farms with dissolved products, urea through to maintenance fertiliser, we have you covered.
Can You Relate To These …
You can’t believe how expensive fertiliser is. Your neighbours have mentioned theirs is expensive as well.
You have seen your fertiliser still sitting on the ground, it was applied a long time ago, you are wondering if you have wasted your money
You have experienced heavy rain after your annual fertiliser has been appled, you wonder if it all washed away.
You have had an aerial application, and hoping that it only got applied to the paddocks and not to any water.
You are wondering if the way you are applying urea is the reason why you have been getting a lot of lameness
You think there is a better way to fertilise the farm
You would like to spend less on your fertiliser, but grow the same amount of grass.
Granular fertilisers may be one of the biggest inefficiencies on farm

Have your fertiliser applications been followed by a weather event that has left you feeling that your fertiliser has ended up in the waterways or at the neighbours?
Have you had aerial fertiliser applications and hoped that all of it ended up on the paddock and nowhere it shouldn’t, like the nearest river?

Farmers can save by having products applied by Tow and Fert
“Our Vision Is To Make A Positive Contribution To Farms In The South By Providing A Service That Helps Them To Become More Sustainable”
What Do Farmers Like About Our Service?
They like that they can maximise their fertiliser value, meaning fertiliser goes a lot further when it is dissolved and applied in a liquid form. Helping farmers keep ahead of local and national regulations, especially with the reduced nitrogen limits. There is also the minimisation of environmental risks, and helping farmers keep ahead of local and national regulations, especially with the reduced nitrogen limits.
Save time on farm, especially during the busy times.
Why Did We Choose Tow And Fert Machines?
The Tow & Fert is a robust New Zealand made machine that is capable of liquifying traditional fertilisers, mix them with water or effluent and spread them on pastures and crops in ultra-fine particles. It can hold this mix in suspension through agitation and circulation. The ultra fine particles are much easier to digest for microbes. This allows the bacteria to turn the applied nutrients into growth with minimal losses.
Who Do We Help?
Family-owned farms, corporate farms, and sharemilkers. Farms that are organic, regenerative and conventional. We service dairy farms, sheep and beef farms, horticultural and lifestyle blocks throughout most of Southland, and as far as Balclutha, South Otago.

How Much Can I Save With Tow and Fert Application?
The Tow & Fert can be used to apply urea and should see a 30 to 50% reduction in the use of urea without sacrificing growth. But it can be used for so much more. Most farmers are applying a bit of Urea following the cows after grazing and ones or twice a year they will apply Maintenance Fertiliser. This can result in major losses to the environment.

How To Feed The Soil To Grow Grass - Have You Got The 16 Essential Nutrients Covered?
Most farmers are applying a bit of Urea following the cows after grazing and ones or twice a year they will apply Maintenance Fertiliser. This can result in major losses to the environment. There are 16 known essential Nutrients for optimum pasture growth. They consist of major and minor nutrients. Optimum growth can only be obtained if all the requirements are met. Excessive Nutrient application can lead to losses to the environment and your bank account. We have developed a mix that has all of the essential nutrients a plant needs. The mix is designed to feed the soil what it needs to feed the pasture as it grows. It can be applied after every grazing to replace nutrients harvested. This will significantly reduce losses to the environment and is kinder on your bank account. We feed the soil a little more often to reduce losses with a consistant mix of nutrients for healthy and balanced soil.

“For decades farmers have been applying products to their land in granular/particle form. They are now becoming more aware that they can do things differently. Kinder on the land, environment and pocket, but still with great results”.
